About Us
History
Abbeyfield traces its roots back to 1956 when Richard Carr-Gomm recognised the growing issue of loneliness among older people. With a vision to offer greater support and security, Richard bought a property in Bermondsey, London, and invited older people to move in. The idea spread quickly leading to Abbeyfield societies being formed across the UK and in various parts of the world, including Australia, Canada, South Africa, and Belgium.
Abbeyfield in Northern Ireland saw significant growth from the early 1960s, with multiple societies springing up. In 2003, sixteen Abbeyfield societies merged, and a further merger with Wesley Housing Association in 2013, resulted in the establishment of Abbeyfield & Wesley.
Today, Abbeyfield & Wesley remains committed to the original vision of providing companionship and support through housing for older people. By embracing the principles of community, care, and inclusivity, we strive to ensure that residents experience a fulfilling and enriched quality of life.
